Pengis Redux

Posted on

Back in 2015 I made a little game called “Pengis” They were penguins that walked around between habitats doing tasks and meeting avatars. Habitats were connected by bridges, there was a train as well. It was fun, but poorly scripted.

I didn’t use encryption and I over used chat, so there was a lot of dropped messages causing erratic behaviour, and not using encryption meant some individuals would sabotage other peoples fun by injecting messages.

Anyway, it didn’t work out, which was a shame.

This post isn’t about those pengis.

I’m making new pengis but this time they are breedables, they have task stations, meet avatars and roam around enclosures. Bridges are gone, habitats are gone, the train is gone :(

This is my first breedable where I’ve not done everything myself, this time I’ve had some help in the way of a new animesh pengi by Onyx Core (of Dragoos), it’s not finished yet, but I’m excited about the progress.

I’ve done most of the scripting, all thats left is the trait system (breeding works, but there are no traits yet). I will need to wait for the mesh to do that.

I’m currently using the old pengi objects as a place holder while I develop, they’re cute, but dated and static so no screenshots yet!

I’ve got 10 task stations so far, more will be added over time, each task station has 2 tasks a pengi can do at it, there are sounds and particle effects for the tasks. When a pengi completes so many tasks they earn you a badge, which will affect breeding possibilities.

Badges are displayed on the website, or you can display your favourite badges on a badge board inworld which you can purchase seperatley.

Enclosures are similar to home objects, if you remember the original hunny bunnies with their mats, its more like that. However, if you want to make your own enclosure, there are also pengi markers, which are more like home objects in that you set your own range.

Pengis have a disabled mode, where they sit idle and do nothing. They don’t move, breed, eat, or age. This is intended for market mode. They need to be placed into an enclosure (or associated with a pengi marker) to get out of disabled mode.

I’m having a lot of fun working on this, and am excited to release it as open beta soon.

I’ll leave a WIP screenshot of the pengi model (not textured or rigged yet). Thanks Onyx!
